Why so many scissors? Uses and recommendations

Lalawoo can never have enough scissors on hand. There are so many types, and as you begin to purchase them, you will discover the many uses for the various types. You always want to buy good quality scissors depending on the type of craft magic you are creating. Names of scissors include but are not limited to Fiskars, Westcott, Recollections, American Crafts, Provo Craft, Martha Stewart, EK Success and the list goes on, but these are a few of Lalawoo's favs.

We all recall the school safety scissors. These scissors have rounded ends and are perfect for little fingers. There are several sizes of safety scissors as a young person grows. As a crafter always keep several of these on hand in case anyone pint-sized decides they want to craft and be creative.

Dressmaking Shears are long with sharp pointed ends and their blades have flat bottoms and do not line up with the handles and are used solely for cutting fabric. There also Pinking Shears that are used for fabric as well or paper crafting as they give you a decorative zigzag design. These shears are wonderful for stopping certain fabrics from fraying when sewing or hemming.

PLEASE NOTE: All shears for fabric are strictly for fabric and investing in two good pairs of each will keep one happy seamstress no matter your level. However, if you desire pinking shears for crafting there are several out there that are used just for such but keep them separate from your fabric pinking shears.

The scissors we are all familiar with are the classic office scissors. Their blades are long and line up to match the handles. There are so many to choose from stainless to colored handles.

Embroidery scissors are usually small and delicate with small sharp blades for cutting small threads not needed. They are usually tied onto a ribbon so that it can be worn around the neck, or attached to magnets on the embroider's hoop or fabric so that they are always handy and easily accessible.

General crafting scissors are not expensive and are usually found in all stores. These scissors are used to taking a beating such as opening lids, using the tips to tighten a screw when a screwdriver isn't handy, cutting everything from paper, wires, and plastic! What's nice about these is that they are so inexpensive that you don't mind destroying them as you can pick up a few more without hurting that crafty budget. These are truly a good buy and Lalawoo doesn't mind grabbing 2-3 pair at a time from Michael's, Walmart, Kmart, Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts, DollarTree or .99 Cent Stores.

There are also other crafting scissors that give you decorative edges for paper crafting and Scrapbooking but Lalawoo will share their specialty on another blog post. In the meantime, happy cutting and creating!!!
